A great police procedural: Escape Clause By John Sandford

It was around 9 years ago when Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist turned #1 New York Times-bestselling author John Sandford brought Virgil Flowers, a supporting character in his Prey series, to life. The character took the life of its own and now the ninth installment in the Virgil Flowers series, Escape Clause, is yet another great mystery read if you are into police procedural novels.

A Brief Summary:

Virgil Flowers is both a born cop and an unrepentant renegade – tall, lean, often divorced, his hair worn too long for the line of duty. When he finds himself racing a ticking clock to discover the whereabouts of two rare Amur tigers that have been stolen from the Minnesota Zoo, he knows whoever kidnapped the tigers has nefarious designs.

Guessing that the poor animals’ fates are tied to the illegal harvesting of their internal organs for use in traditional Chinese medicine, he knows he has very little time.

Then there’s the homefront. Virgil’s relationship with his girlfriend Frankie has been getting kind of serious, but when Frankie’s sister Sparkle moves in for the summer, the situation gets a lot more complicated. For one thing, her research into migrant workers is about to bring her up against some very violent people who emphatically do not want to be researched. For another…she thinks Virgil’s kind of cute.

Our Take: This book delivers exactly what a fan would expect from Sandford: An intriguing police procedural plot seasoned with humor, quirky criminals, and an abundance of local (Minnesota and Wisconsin) flavor.
Overall, we loved reading this title – A great entertainment read and the ending was just Perfect!
