Hulu Picks Up Two New Scandinavian Thrillers

Hulu has picked up exclusive US SVOD rights for two Scandinavian thrillers titled Below the Surface (Gidseltagningen) and Midnight Sun (Midnattssol) as part of a content deal with distributor Studiocanal.

It is Hulu’s latest foreign-language imports following deals related to shows such as Spanish drama Grand Hotel and Swedish detective series Wallander.

Below The Surface is an eight-part breathtaking thriller series starring Johannes Lassen, Sara Hjort Ditlevsen and Paprika Steen, and it follows a terrorism storyline in Copenhagen in 2017 as 15 innocent people are held hostage underground in a subway train.

Midnight Sun is a drama with a police procedural theme: The brutal murder of a French citizen sees French homicide investigator Kahina Zadi (Leïla Bekhti) go to Kiruna, Sweden. Together with Rutger Burlin (Peter Stormare) she begins an investigation that soon takes on staggering proportions.

Head of International Sales for Studiocanal, Beatriz Campos, said: “With the expanding popularity of foreign language series in this key market, we are thrilled to close such a substantial package of premium dramas with an exciting blend of European languages which will be showcased exclusively to US audiences for the first time.”

On another front, Hulu has also acquired four-part British drama Trust Me, which stars Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker as a nurse with a secret. The series was produced by Happy Valley indie Red Production Company and aired on BBC1 earlier this year.
